From the 20^th of December 2002 the Australian Food Safety Standards Code has been in effect, and strict penalties apply for breaches of the mandatory principles of the code.

The different states of Australia have different penalties for breaches of the code. However, just to give you a sense of the ramifications of any breach:

1. As an individual you can be fined up to $75,000 and as a corporation you can be fined $375,000.
2. If it can be shown you knew that food was unsafe you can be fined $100,000 as an individual and $500,000 for a corporation – and face up to 2 years in prison.

And not only that the above penalties are based on handling food intended for sale as well as selling the food. Therefore if you are involved with a manufacturing or food processing business you can still face these penalties.
